Why Your Financial Advisor Should Be Part of Your Trusted Team

The Best Financial Plans Aren't Built Alone

More than 20 years ago, as an engaged couple, Shelley and I began building our first home together on a piece of property I had purchased on the same street where I grew up. We were excited about starting our lives together, and our plan was simple: get married and spend our very first night as husband and wife in our new home.

Life had other plans.

Construction delays meant the house wasn't ready in time. Thankfully, family stepped in and graciously offered us a place to stay, turning what could have been a stressful situation into a cherished memory.

While the delay wasn't ideal, the home-building process taught me a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my career as a financial advisor.

Everyone Was Working...But Not Together

One day I had to leave my office and drive to the construction site because the contractors had reached a breaking point.

Every time I walked into the house, one contractor was frustrated with another. Each believed they were doing their own job correctly, but no one seemed focused on how their work affected everyone else.

Eventually I had enough.

I gathered everyone together and reminded them of something simple:

You all work for me, and I need you to work together.

That conversation changed everything.

It also taught me a lesson that applies just as much to financial planning as it did to building a house.

Building Financial Success Requires a Team

Your financial life is much like building a home.

There are many professionals involved, each bringing specialized knowledge and experience. When they communicate and work together, the result is often a more coordinated approach.

That's why I believe every family can benefit from having a team of trusted professionals that may include:

  • A financial advisor to help coordinate long-term financial planning and wealth management strategies.
  • A CPA or tax professional to provide tax planning and tax preparation guidance.
  • An estate planning attorney to help prepare wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and other legal documents.
  • A property and casualty insurance agent to help protect your home, vehicles, and other assets.
  • Other specialists when needed, depending on your unique goals and circumstances.

Each professional has a different perspective. Each sees opportunities and risks through the lens of their own expertise.

When everyone communicates, better decisions can often be made.

Financial Planning Is a Team Sport

No one professional has every answer.

Your attorney understands legal implications.

Your CPA understands tax consequences.

Your insurance professional understands risk management.

As your financial advisor, my role is to help connect the pieces and keep your overall financial picture in focus.

Whether you're preparing for retirement, managing investments, planning for future generations, or navigating major life decisions, collaboration among your trusted advisors can help identify opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked.

My Commitment to Every Client

One of the most rewarding parts of my profession is working alongside other professionals who genuinely care about serving our mutual clients.

When appropriate, I welcome the opportunity to coordinate with your accountant, attorney, insurance professionals, and other trusted advisors. My goal is to help ensure everyone understands how their recommendations may affect the bigger financial picture.

Just like building a home, every professional has an important role.

The best outcomes often happen when everyone is pulling in the same direction.

Let's Build Your Financial Future Together

Whether you're just beginning your financial journey or preparing for retirement, having the right team can make a meaningful difference.

If you already have trusted professionals, I'd be honored to work alongside them. If you're still building your team, I'd welcome the opportunity to discuss how thoughtful financial planning can fit into your overall strategy.

No two individuals or families have identical goals, financial circumstances, or tax situations. Any financial, investment, insurance, or tax strategy should be evaluated based on your unique needs and, when appropriate, in consultation with your tax and legal professionals.

At Shepherd's Way Financial, we believe the strongest financial plans are built through communication, collaboration, and relationships that last.
